As a beginner to blogging, it can be so confusing and overwhelming to understand the concept behind making money with your blog.
I know when I started, I was so clueless on how bloggers had ads on their sites, how they sold products, how they landed brand deals.
I wanted to make this post to help those beginners out and explain the simplest ways to get started on monetizing your blog – so that it’s easy to comprehend!
Now, I have been blogging only since January of this year, but I have to say, I think I’ve picked up and learned a lot in these past 5 months in terms of making money blogging. I occasionally see posts that will say not to expect any money made in the first year of blogging, totally false!
I’ve managed to make money from my blog, since the month after I started blogging, and since then, I have been coming up with new ways to increase my income. It’s nothing big and special yet, but I’m building upon something, and it is entirely possible to start making money right when you create a blog!
Essentials to have in order to monetize your blog
- Google Adsense – This is a complete MUST. Have ads running on your site, this will be the simplest way to start making some kind of money. It’s small money, but nevertheless, money! Get started on creating an account by clicking right here, and be prepared, it takes a while to gain approval. It took me nearly 2 months to get it finally up and running on my blog!
- Skimlinks – Another essential to have some money rolling in, it’s worth looking into. Skimlinks is available as a plugin on WordPress, and basically scans all the links you have in your posts to products, then, when someone purchases the product, you receive a small percentage commission.
I’m not positive on what the rate of commission is, it varies on the product being advertised, but this is definitely a handy tool to look into!
- Being an Affiliate – As a blogger, there are times when you purchase a product and there is an opportunity to be an affiliate! Basically this means, you advertise for the person who sells the product, whenever someone purchases it via your affiliate link, you get a commission!
You can also be an affiliate by promoting a company with a discount code that people can use, again, when that code is used, you receive a commission.
Good resources to look into for opportunities like this would be ShareASale, purchasing another bloggers’ digital product of which has an affiliate link attached, or reaching out to brands you are interested in and would like to promote.
- Selling Products/Services – Ding ding ding!! This is the mother-lode to an income stream. Selling your own stuff is not as hard as it looks! Don’t be intimidated by it, and don’t feel like you’re too “early” into the blogging scene to start creating content!
A little side tip: Create opt-in offers that are FREE to get people onto a mailing list! This is a process of building potential future customers when you release products, and also gives you a chance to establish a relationship with your viewers.
Here’s a few examples of opt-in offers I have created:

Don’t be afraid to begin creating and selling, even if you just started blogging, because it builds more credibility in the long run!
A big piece of advice I’d give to anybody wanting to sell and create products is to establish a relationship with your social media following, with your loyal blog viewers. This creates trust and demand for your products!
I hope this general overview helps you get started on the journey to monetizing your blog!
